Iskandar project can absorb the retrenched

KOTA TINGGI: Iskandar Malaysia has the potential to absorb Malaysians who may lose their jobs in Singapore due to the global economic slowdown, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said on Saturday.

"Some 300,000 Malaysians work in Singapore.

"The multi-billion ringgit project expected to take off will create jobs for those who might lose theirs in the republic.

"We should be able to take in workers (from Singapore) as Iskandar Malaysia will have a host of job opportunities.

"We do not encourage foreign investors who participate in Iskandar Malaysia to employ foreigners. Locals should be given priority."

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman recently said that foreign workers usually suffered by way of retrenchment when Singapore went through a recession.

He said Malaysians working in the republic should register with employment agencies in Johor for jobs, particularly in the manufacturing and oil and gas sectors.

Meanwhile, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad lauded Bank Negara, the Financial Mediation Bureau, the Credit Counselling and Management Agency and Malaysian Deposit Insurance Corporation for organising the Financial Awareness Week exhibition here.

"It is an opportunity for the people of Johor to upgrade their knowledge and become more literate about financial matters," said Shahrir.

Bank Negara deputy governor Datuk Zamani Abdul Ghani said 6,000 visitors had visited the exhibition since it opened on Friday.

Free financial consultation and debt management advice will be available at the exhibition, which ends at 10pm today.

"This is an opportunity to get professional advice on debt management and other financial matters."
